Peter MacManu, the Campaign Manager for President Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections, has disclosed that the InterParty Advisory Committee (IPAC) has agreed to the use of the Ghana Card as the sole method of identifying citizenship for registration purposes in the upcoming 2024 elections. MacManu revealed that IPAC had held three meetings to discuss the matter, and all parties, except the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), had agreed to the use of the Ghana Card.
In an interview with Nana Yaa Mensah on Asaase 99.5 Accra, MacManu explained that the Electoral Commission (EC) had consulted IPAC on the issue, and the committee had taken the decision to support the use of the Ghana Card. He further stated that the NDC had boycotted the meetings, but all other parties had participated in the discussions.
MacManu advised those who were opposed to the Constitutional Instrument (CI) to galvanize a two-thirds majority to stop it. He added that the NDC was always opposed to measures aimed at building a credible electoral system, but the use of the Ghana Card would bring credibility to the elections.
MacManu also highlighted the need to remove minors from the voters’ register, arguing that the use of the Ghana Card was one of the surest ways of achieving this goal. He noted that he had been following constitutional instruments from the Electoral Commission since 1992, and his understanding of the constitution was that the CI could be truncated by a two-thirds majority of Members of Parliament.
In conclusion, MacManu emphasized the need for the country to grow and evolve, stating that the use of the guarantor system, which had been in place since 1992, was outdated and needed to be replaced with a more credible system. He urged all parties to work together towards building a credible electoral system that would promote transparency and accountability.
