The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, Most Rev. Mathew Akwasi Gyamfi, has articulated that the church, as a religious institution, is committed to enhancing proximity to healthcare services and ensuring accessibility for all to contribute to the development of a robust and healthy society.

He made this statement during the 34th Edition of the “World Day of the Sick” celebration, and the commissioning of a 40-bed capacity ward at St. Mathew Catholic Hospital in Ampenkro, located in the Dormaa East District of the Bono Region.

Most Rev. Mathew Akwasi Gyamfi emphasized that illness is an inevitable aspect of the human condition, as ordained by God. Consequently, the church recognizes the necessity of establishing healthcare facilities to ensure that those who are ill receive the requisite care and attention, following the example set by Jesus Christ in the Bible.

He underscored the importance of expressing empathy for the sick, akin to the actions of the Samarian who assisted his fellow Jew found unconscious by the roadside, as recounted in the Holy Bible. He urged everyone to emulate the Samarian by contributing to the provision of stable healthcare for the sick and everyone within the society.

Most Rev. Mathew Akwasi Gyamfi emphasized that while the Samarian sent his fellow Jew to a healthcare facility, he did not personally treat him but was treated by Nurses and Doctors, therefore, healthcare providers at various facilities must demonstrate dedication and make conscious efforts to protect the sick who visit their facilities.

He further stressed that healthcare provision should extend beyond healthcare facilities to individual homes. He noted that there are elderly and sick individuals in many households who also require the utmost attention and care as they undergo treatment at home. Consequently, family members should strive to provide the necessary attention to these individuals to offer them relief as they contend with their illnesses. He highlighted that illness is an inevitable part of life for everyone at some point and so the sick must not be treated badly.

During her address at the program, the Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Hon. Racheal Owusuaa, emphasized her commitment to fostering social development within her constituency. She highlighted her efforts in initiating the construction of various infrastructure projects, including roads, healthcare facilities, and educational facilities, to promote effective development in the District. She took the opportunity to appeal to farmers affected by the road construction, as their farmlands are situated near the roads, requesting their understanding and forgiveness for both herself and the contractor to ensure the successful realization of development for the residents of Dormaa East.

Hon. Racheal Owusuaa stated that the developmental projects have been distributed equitably, exemplified by the construction of a kindergarten block for the Roman School at Wamanafo. She further pledged to tare the road leading to the ST Matthew Catholic Hospital by the end of the year 2026, aiming to facilitate the smooth movement of individuals to the facility, free from dust and mud during the dry and rainy seasons, respectively.
