The appointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Ghana Black Stars has sparked a divide among football fans, especially following the revelation of his World Cup record.
The 73-year-old, confirmed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Monday evening, brings extensive international experience, having managed in five FIFA World Cup tournaments.
However, statistics shared by TV3 Ghana on their social media platforms have ignited a heated debate. Queiroz has overseen 16 World Cup matches, with a record of four wins, four draws, and eight losses, scoring 19 goals and conceding 19. While some fans believe these numbers are underwhelming for a coach of his stature, others argue the context should be considered, taking into account the strength of the teams he managed.
Reactions on the TV3 Ghana post reflected this split. Some supporters questioned whether such a record justified his appointment at such a pivotal time, particularly with Ghana facing a tough group in the upcoming 2026 tournament. Others expressed concern over the timing, coming just weeks after Otto Addo’s dismissal.
On the other hand, a strong group of supporters backed Queiroz, highlighting his experience and success in qualifying teams for the World Cup. For them, his vast exposure at the highest level is far more significant than the raw statistics.
Queiroz, undeterred by the mixed reception, has described the role as “not just another job, but a mission” as he prepares for the tournament. With Ghana placed in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, all eyes will now be on the coach to deliver on the pitch and prove the GFA’s faith in him was justified.
