The Public Relations Officer of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA), Mr. Amadu Mustapha Zakari, has announced that the June National Sanitation Day exercise will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The exercise was rescheduled following heavy rainfall that disrupted the originally planned clean-up activity.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Zakari explained that the decision was taken to ensure the effective use of logistics and resources already mobilized for the sanitation campaign. He said the exercise will take place from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with participants expected to converge at the Taxi Rank. He added that the clean-up will cover selected public spaces and key routes within the metropolis aimed at improving environmental sanitation and promoting healthier communities.

He indicated that the clean-up exercise will cover two main routes: from the Taxi Rank through the Vodafone Office area to Alhassan Idrissu and back, and another team from Alhassan Idrissu through the Aboabo Traffic Light to the Abedi Pele Roundabout along the Nyohini Road corridor. Mr. Zakari urged residents, traders, transport operators, and community groups to actively participate in the exercise, stressing that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility.

Mr. Zakari further called on transport operators, including “Yellow-Yellow” riders, to suspend their operations during the exercise and join the clean-up. He also appealed to traditional and religious leaders to support the campaign by encouraging environmental cleanliness and incorporating sanitation messages into their sermons. He emphasized that while the Assembly and government are providing logistics and materials, the success of the exercise largely depends on the active participation and commitment of residents.

He expressed concern over the reluctance of some residents to take personal hygiene and sanitation issues seriously, noting that the Assembly is intensifying public education and sensitization efforts to address this challenge. He said stakeholder engagements have already been held as part of preparations and expressed optimism that residents would cooperate to ensure a successful exercise.
