Over 900 Newborns Died in 2025 – GRMA President

The President of the Ghana Registered Midwives Association (GRMA) has revealed that over 900 newborn babies died in Ghana in 2025 alone.

 

Speaking at the 2026 35th International Day of the Midwife event, GRMA National President Madam Netta Forson Ackon disclosed that Ghana recorded over 900 neonatal deaths in 202 a situation she condemned in the strongest terms.

 

She highlighted numerous factors contributing to newborn deaths in Ghanaian hospitals,stressing that inadequate tools and equipment is a major cause.

 

Madam Ackon appealed to the government to support midwives nationwide to eliminate these preventable deaths.

 

She called for salary increases,better motivation,and the recruitment of over one million additional midwives to fill critical gaps.

 

“There is a severe shortage of midwives,” she noted, adding that the association aims for zero neonatal deaths someday.

 

She also urged the government to supply essential medical tools and equipment.

 

 

In an interview with the Channel 247 news Yaw Boagyan,Madam Safiatu Ibrahim popularly known as Midwife Safia and the Overall Best Midwife in the Central Region working at Our Lady of Grace Government Hospital in Breman Asikuma, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District, encouraged her colleagues to work diligently regardless of low salaries.

 

She urged midwives nationwide to show patience with pregnant women seeking care and shared that reducing neonatal deaths is her top priority.

 

Midwife Safia is already making an impact in her district and beyond by educating pregnant women via social media, which has boosted hospital outcomes.

 

 

She appealed to the government for more support and specifically asked Mr. Ibrahim Mahama and President John Dramani Mahama to organize workshops for this year’s award winners to build their skills and knowledge
