The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has expressed concerns over ongoing political interference that threatens the independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which he described as a frequent target for those seeking to undermine its mandate.

Speaking at a national dialogue on March 31, Mr. Agyebeng highlighted that the survival of the OSP has largely been sustained by the support of President John Dramani Mahama. Without this backing, he suggested, the office could have faced dissolution, especially after reports surfaced that a bill prepared by the Majority in Parliament sought to abolish the institution.

Agyebeng further noted that many politicians perceive the OSP as a threat to their interests, leaving it vulnerable to attempts aimed at weakening its authority and operations. He emphasized the urgent need for greater public and civil society support to safeguard the office’s autonomy.

He called for constitutional protections to ensure that the office’s continued existence and effectiveness are not subject to the whims of any sitting President. “We must secure this office for the long term,” he urged, warning that future officeholders should not be preoccupied with defending its survival, but rather focus on its core mission of fighting corruption.
