The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has announced plans to ban the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial transportation in Ghana, citing safety concerns.
Abraham Amaliba, Director-General of the NRSA, revealed that the decision comes after a comprehensive assessment by a Technical Working Group, which investigated the roadworthiness of Toyota Voxy vehicles converted into taxis. The group’s findings raised significant safety alarms, prompting the authority to take action.
In a press conference, Mr. Amaliba confirmed that steps are underway to halt the importation of Toyota Voxy vehicles into the country. Additionally, he emphasized that garages responsible for converting right-hand drive vehicles to left-hand drive would face closure and legal prosecution.
A detailed directive on the ban is expected within the next two weeks, though the decision to restrict the vehicle from commercial use has already been made. Meanwhile, operators have been advised to limit Toyota Voxy taxis to short-distance trips until the new regulations are enforced.
The NRSA is collaborating with the Customs Division to prevent the importation of both Toyota Voxy and Toyota Vitz models. Investigations revealed that nearly 7,000 Toyota Voxys have already entered Ghana, with concerns over their safety for commercial use.
Alexander Obeng, from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), supported the initiative, adding that the Police will work with relevant agencies to ensure the vehicles are blocked at the ports.
This move is part of broader efforts by the NRSA to enhance road safety standards and protect passengers across the country.
