The National Identification Authority (NIA) has refuted circulating reports claiming that the Ghana Card can now be used for financial transactions. In a statement issued on April 8, 2026, the NIA called these claims “inaccurate and misleading” and urged the public to disregard them.

Signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the Head of Corporate Affairs, the statement clarified that the Ghana Card has not been activated for such purposes. The NIA stressed that members of the public should rely solely on official communications from the Authority regarding the card’s usage.

While the NIA acknowledged ongoing discussions involving policymakers, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies about the potential integration of the Ghana Card into Ghana’s banking and payment systems, the Authority emphasized that these discussions are still in progress and have yet to reach a conclusion.

The NIA assured Ghanaians that any official updates regarding the use of the Ghana Card for financial transactions would be announced through its verified channels.

The NIA also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity, security, and proper usage of the National Identification System.
