The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of encouraging illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, through its defence of former Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, the NPP’s response to allegations involving Wontumi demonstrates that the party is not committed to fighting illegal mining activities in the country.
He argued that rather than allowing investigations into claims surrounding individuals linked to the sector, the NPP has chosen to defend its members, which he said raises questions about the party’s commitment to ending galamsey.
The NDC Chairman maintained that illegal mining continues to pose serious threats to Ghana’s water bodies, forests and environment, and requires a united national effort beyond political interests.
He called on all political parties and stakeholders to support measures aimed at protecting the country’s natural resources and holding individuals responsible for environmental destruction accountable.
The NPP has, however, maintained that it remains committed to responsible mining and has previously rejected claims that it supports illegal mining activities.
