The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission, Major General Maxwell Obuba, says an estimated 82,500 people in Ghana are currently involved in drug use, with the Ashanti Region recording the highest number.
According to him, about 16,300 drug users are in the Ashanti Region, making it one of the areas requiring increased attention in the fight against substance abuse.
Major General Obuba stressed the need for stronger prevention programmes, public education and rehabilitation efforts to address the growing concern.
He called for collaboration between state institutions, communities and families to reduce the impact of drug abuse on society.
