Traditional Leaders, Residents Angry Over “Bush” Comment About 24-Hour Economy Market
The Chief of Gyedu in the Mankessim Traditional Council, Nana Anyanful VI, together with elders and residents, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately reshuffle the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Mfantseman, Hon. Eric Stanley Acquah, over comments they describe as disrespectful to the Gyedu community

According to Nana Anyanful VI, the demand follows remarks allegedly made by the MCE during the recent two-day National Sanitation Exercise, where he reportedly stated that the government’s proposed 24-Hour Economy Market was originally intended to be constructed in Mankessim but was relocated to Gyedu after market women protested, describing Gyedu as “the bush.”
The chief said the remarks have deeply offended the people of Gyedu and the entire Mankessim Traditional Council.

He questioned why the MCE would make such comments when he was the same official who performed the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the 24-Hour Economy Market at Gyedu.
Nana Anyanful VI stated that the comments amount to an insult against the chiefs and residents and urged the President, the Chief of Staff, the Minister for Local Government, the Vice President, the Central Regional Minister, and the NDC Regional Executives to advise the MCE on how to engage respectfully with the people he was appointed to serve.
Some residents of Gyedu also backed the chief’s call, insisting that their community is not a “bush” as described.

They pointed out that Gyedu hosts the Mankessim Divisional Police Headquarters and the District Police Station, demonstrating that it is a well-established community.
The residents further claimed that the majority of voters in Gyedu support the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and warned that the MCE’s comments could negatively affect the party’s electoral fortunes in the constituency ahead of the 2028 general elections.
They therefore appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to reshuffle the Mfantseman MCE, arguing that he has shown disrespect to the chiefs and people of Gyedu.
