John Dramani Mahama, a former President of Ghana, has officially announced his intention to run for the presidency again in the next elections in 2024 as a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Speaking at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Volta Region, Mahama stated that he had taken this decision after extensive consultations, reflection, and prayer. If he wins the 2024 election, it will be a historic achievement for Mahama, who will be making his second attempt to return to power.

Mahama is expected to face a new candidate from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), as the current president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who Mahama previously defeated in 2012, is no longer eligible to contest, having served his mandatory eight-year term.

Addressing the audience, Mahama emphasized the importance of experience and togetherness for Ghana at this stage. He also described the 2024 elections as the most defining in the country’s history, given the difficult and challenging period of the past six years. Mahama criticized the Akufo-Addo-led administration, describing it as “clueless and at many times callous” and pointing out that the country is struggling to pay off its debts, causing it to be seen in a negative light in the eyes of the international community.

Mahama will go into the NDC Presidential Primary on May 13, where he is considered the clear favorite, with Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, Kojo Bonsu, and Ernest Korbea also likely to stand as candidates.
