In an exclusive interview with Wano Wano of Emerepa TV, former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, hailed the Black Stars squad that represented Ghana at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany as the nation’s “dream team.” Reflecting on their historic debut on the world stage, Nyantakyi praised the team for their exceptional camaraderie, dedication, and patriotism.
“The players were ready to kill and die for the country,” Nyantakyi remarked, emphasizing the unity and selflessness within the squad. “They were each other’s keepers, and that spirit carried us far.”
Nyantakyi attributed much of the team’s success to their hunger and determination to represent Ghana internationally. He urged current and future football managers to prioritize passion when selecting players. “As a coach, you should select players who are hungry to play for the country,” he advised.
The former GFA President also highlighted the critical role of competent leadership on and off the pitch. He praised the strategic decision-making during his tenure, which included appointing the right coaches and encouraging continuous improvement within the team management. “We pushed Kwesi Appiah, for instance, to upgrade his coaching certification. It was about ensuring that everyone was prepared to excel,” he explained.
Despite their groundbreaking success at the World Cup, Nyantakyi lamented the team’s inability to secure an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title during his time in office. “I was disappointed we didn’t win the AFCON, even though we reached the finals twice,” he admitted.
Nyantakyi’s reflections with Wano Wano underscore the importance of teamwork, passion, and leadership in achieving success, leaving an enduring legacy for Ghana football.
