Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has had his passport confiscated after being granted bail by a US immigration court. Sources informed JoyNews that he is scheduled to return to court on April 27 for deportation proceedings, as the case continues to be delayed due to missing paperwork and jurisdictional issues.
Ofori-Atta’s release followed a successful argument by his legal team, who pointed out that the court could not legally treat him as a flight risk without an official extradition request from Ghana. His bail was secured through a private bond company, for a reportedly substantial sum.
At a hearing in March 2026, the judge had emphasized the importance of receiving Ghana’s extradition request before making a final determination on bail. This request has yet to be submitted, as the US Attorney General has not provided the necessary documentation to the State Attorney.
Ofori-Atta, who was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on January 6, 2026, is still awaiting the outcome of his case. In Ghana, the Office of the Special Prosecutor continues its pursuit of corruption charges against him, awaiting his return for further legal proceedings.
