President John Mahama has expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly in Israel, referring to it as a “painful irony” that the land where Christ was born and preached love and forgiveness is now at the heart of violence and war.
Speaking during the Good Friday service at Independence Square, Mahama told the congregation at the Light House Church that Easter should not only be a time of reflection but also a call for action toward peace and reconciliation.
“As we observe Easter, we must not overlook the suffering in our world,” the President said. “Today, our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters in the Middle East, especially in the Holy Land—the birthplace of our faith—where innocent lives continue to be lost and human suffering deepens due to the ongoing conflict.”
He noted that it was deeply painful to witness the land where Christ preached love, forgiveness, and peace now serving as a battleground for war and violence.
President Mahama extended prayers to those impacted by the conflict, including those in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iran, and surrounding regions, urging for divine intervention and peace.
Quoting Matthew 5:9, he reminded Ghanaians of the importance of peacemaking: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”
He appealed to global leaders and citizens to embrace dialogue, restraint, and long-term solutions to conflicts.
Reiterating the core message of Easter, President Mahama emphasized that hatred cannot overcome hatred—only love can bring about lasting peace. He called on individuals to take personal responsibility in fostering unity, saying, “Each of us must make decisions that do not contribute to division but instead promote unity. We cannot be part of the problems we complain about but must be part of the solutions we seek.”
The President also reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and human dignity, urging citizens to carry the message of Easter into their everyday lives by promoting hope, unity, and reconciliation.
