Ignore Ayuba and Kojo – They Were Not Installed by Any Recognized Ruling House, Says Hon. Afutu Quartey

By Joseph Nana Yaw Cobbina
Hon. Solomon Afutu Quartey, Stool Secretary of the Gbawe Kwatei Family and the Ga Asare Kpakpatse We clan, has called on the public to disregard claims by individuals named Ayuba and Kojo, stating that neither has been duly installed by any of the six recognized ruling houses.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Hon. Afutu Quartey provided historical context about the origins of Gbawe.
He explained that the area was founded by Nii Guate I, also known as Nii Kpakpa Osiakwan I, a prominent figure of the Asare Kpakpatse We clan.
According to oral tradition, the clan traces its roots to ancient Israel, migrating through Ile-Ife in present-day Nigeria before settling at Ayawaso, the former Ga capital. From there, they moved through Kpatse Korle (now Darkuman) and Gamashie before finally establishing the Gbawe State under the leadership of Nii Guate I.
Hon. Afutu Quartey noted that the Kpakpatse We clan, a key pillar of Ga society, is traditionally divided into two main groups: the Hunters (Gborbilor) and the Blacksmiths (Suulor).
The Hunters were led by Nii Kpakpa Osiakwan I, who guided a group of early Ga-speaking migrants, known in oral history as the Wo Sagba people, from Tetetutu (Same’), believed to have been located beyond the Volta River.
He further explained that descendants of the clan in Ga Mashie trace their lineage to two principal ancestors: Nii Guate (Kpakpa Osiakwan), leader of the Hunters, and Nii Guakoi (Koi Obredu), patriarch of the Blacksmiths.
Together, these lineages form the foundation of the Kpakpatse We clan, which has played a significant role in the socio-political and spiritual development of Ga Mashie.
Following the death of Nii Kpakpa Osiakwan I in 1740, leadership passed through several notable figures, including Nii Guate I in 1775, Nii Laryea Faamlite I (1806–1808), Nii Kwatei Asuansa Kofi Bremah I, and Nii Kwatelai Mensafio Gogo I, all of whom served as Djaasetse of the Asare Kpakpatse We.
Hon. Afutu Quartey revealed that on February 10, 2025, the late Nii Adam Kwatei Quartey, together with a council of principal elders from the six ruling houses of the Gbawe Kwatei Family, officially installed Nii Kpakpa Nkpa Quartey II—known in private life as Mr. Isaac Nii Laryea Quartey—as the Djaasetse and Head of the family.
He strongly condemned Ayuba and Kojo, describing them as impostors falsely claiming leadership positions, and warned the public against engaging with them in any official capacity.
Hon. Afutu Quartey added that the family will soon organize a community durbar to present the authentic history of the Gbawe Kwatei Family and the Ga Asare Kpakpatse We clan, to educate the public and set the record straight.
