Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says he feels unsafe under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, claiming Ghana’s democratic space and freedom of expression are being threatened.
His comments come ahead of the NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration scheduled for Thursday, August 6, which the party says is aimed at defending constitutional governance, the rule of law, and citizens’ fundamental rights.
Speaking on Joy News on Wednesday, August 5, Mr. Aboagye said the demonstration was motivated by growing concerns among some Ghanaians that expressing their views on national issues could attract intimidation or punishment.
He explained that, due to his outspoken nature and involvement in public discussions, he personally feels vulnerable and fears that his comments could put him in difficult situations.
> “I don’t feel safe. I won’t lie to you. I love to talk and I love to debate. I feel that my mouth will put me into trouble,” he said.
According to him, many of the thousands expected to participate in the protest share similar concerns, arguing that free speech and the ability to express opinions without fear are essential elements of Ghana’s democracy.
Mr. Aboagye added that the protest is meant to highlight the need to protect democratic institutions and ensure that citizens can freely exercise their constitutional rights.
