Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on Ghana’s political actors to end the culture of political retaliation and focus on building a more mature democratic system.
Speaking during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on Thursday, August 6, the Effutu MP said the country must move away from a situation where governments use state institutions to target political opponents.
He stressed that his concerns were not limited to members of the NPP but were about protecting fairness, justice and decency within Ghana’s political space.
According to him, political leaders must prioritise policies and solutions to address the challenges facing citizens rather than engaging in actions aimed at settling political scores.
> “As a country, we must end this vicious cycle of ‘you do me, I do you’. All my life, I’ve believed that we can do politics in a very decent way,” he said.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin added that leaders should focus on addressing issues such as underdevelopment, particularly in rural communities, instead of allowing political disagreements to dominate national discourse.
The NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration is aimed at protesting what the party describes as political persecution, selective justice and the misuse of state institutions under the current administration.
The party has raised concerns over several issues, including the acquittal and discharge of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, which it says has raised questions about fairness and consistency in the justice system.
The NPP is also protesting alleged harassment, arrests and detentions of some of its members by state investigative and security agencies.
