After Nigerian presidential candidate John Obi expressed dissatisfaction with the results of the general election and called for a fresh election, Ghanaians have taken to social media to demand an apology from their former president, John Dramani Mahama. In his role as head of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), Mahama had previously criticized Ghana’s Electoral Commission on Facebook, stating that Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was more credible.

Many Ghanaians are now calling on Mahama to apologize for misleading the public about INEC’s credibility compared to Ghana’s Electoral Commission. Mahama’s statement from his pre-election mission in Nigeria read, “One thing that has struck me…is the confidence all the candidates and parties have expressed in the Independent Electoral Commission. They all testify that INEC has listened and taken their concerns on board…Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for my Electoral Commission (EC).”

Ghanaians are pointing to Mahama’s comments as evidence that he had unfairly criticized Ghana’s Electoral Commission and that his remarks could have influenced public opinion in a negative way. As such, they believe an apology is warranted.
