Ghana Water Ltd Announces Three-Day Shutdown of Kpong-Tema Pipelines for Maintenance
Customers in parts of the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions are expected to experience temporary interruptions in water supply as Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) begins a scheduled maintenance exercise on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.
The maintenance works are set to take place from Thursday, August 6 to Saturday, August 8, 2026, and will involve the replacement of weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines.
According to GWL, routine engineering inspections identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated pipeline sections that require urgent replacement to prevent major breakdowns, reduce water losses and improve the reliability of water supply.
To allow the exercise to be carried out safely, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down, while five sections of the transmission pipelines will be isolated for the replacement works.
Communities expected to be affected include Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua and Teshie.
Other affected areas include Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby communities.
Ghana Water Ltd says its technical teams will work around the clock throughout the three-day period to complete the project on schedule and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.
The company has advised residents in affected areas to store enough water before the commencement of the exercise and use available supplies responsibly during the interruption.
Critical institutions, including hospitals and other essential service providers, have also been encouraged to make contingency arrangements. GWL added that water tankers will be deployed to support selected critical facilities.
The company explained that the maintenance project forms part of efforts to reduce pipeline bursts, minimise emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and strengthen water supply within the Tema and eastern corridor areas.
Ghana Water Ltd has apologised for the inconvenience and assured customers that updates on the progress of the works will be communicated through its official channels. The public will also be informed once normal water supply is fully restored.
