The Ga North Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Department has begun the demolition of a toilet facility being constructed beneath the Pokuase Interchange along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The demolition comes amid public controversy over the ownership and legitimacy of the project, with earlier reports suggesting that a private individual was behind the construction.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga North, Akwetey Agbo, had previously denied claims that the facility was a private project, insisting that it was an initiative of the Assembly.
In an interview with JoyNews, Mr Agbo explained that the project was intended to help improve the organisation of transport activities in the area by providing a more structured environment for transport operators and commuters.
However, concerns raised by residents over the abandoned state of the facility contributed to growing public criticism. Some residents said the unfinished structure had become a nuisance, with overgrown bushes creating safety concerns.
There were also reports of vehicles falling into the area, further increasing calls for action.
The demolition of the facility marks the latest development in the controversy surrounding the use of the space beneath the Pokuase Interchange.
