The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, has uncovered a mass fish mortality incident at the Tema Shipyard. This discovery was made on April 6, 2026, and a joint statement was issued on April 9, urging the public to avoid consuming fish from the affected area.

The cause of the fish deaths is currently under urgent investigation by a rapid-response team that includes FDA inspectors, police officers, and Tema Port officials. At this stage, there is no evidence suggesting intentional sabotage or a widespread health emergency.

A total of between 60 to 80 fish samples, along with water samples, have been collected for priority testing in laboratories. The public is advised not to harvest, buy, or consume any fish or seafood from the Tema Shipyard or nearby areas until the FDA issues an “All-Clear” notice.

However, fish sourced from certified cold-chain markets outside the affected zone remains safe, provided it is cooked to an internal temperature of at least 63°C.

The FDA also encourages individuals who spot dead or distressed fish to report them via the FDA Hotline: 0551 112 224/5 or to the nearest FDA office.

Those who have consumed fish from the area and are experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or skin irritation are advised to seek medical attention immediately and inform their healthcare provider of their potential exposure.

The FDA will provide further updates as they become available, urging the public to rely only on official channels for accurate information.
