Ibrahim Tanko Urges GFA to Keep Faith in Otto Addo
Former Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the national team despite recent criticisms.
In an interview with Flashscore, Tanko refuted claims that the Black Stars’ job is “too big” for Addo, citing his accomplishments under challenging circumstances.
“I don’t believe the job is too big for him. He took over at a difficult time and managed to secure Ghana’s place at the World Cup in Qatar. Although the performance wasn’t as expected, he was replaced by Chris Hughton, who was the technical director at the time,” Tanko explained.
He acknowledged the pressure on Addo but argued that sacking him now would be a costly and ineffective decision, especially with key matches ahead.
“His return was always going to come with challenges. Sacking him now doesn’t make sense. We should give him time to prove himself, particularly with World Cup qualifiers on the horizon. Besides, he recently signed a three-year contract—terminating it would mean paying him off, and there’s no guarantee a new coach would make an immediate impact,” Tanko added.
Tanko’s comments come amid ongoing public debates about Otto Addo’s tenure, following mixed results under his leadership.
His defense emphasizes the importance of patience and continuity as Ghana gears up for crucial international competitions.
