The consumption of clean and unclean animals has been a long-standing debate within the church, with some religious leaders disapproving of eating unclean animals. There are various reasons for this, including Jewish dietary laws, African food taboos, and health concerns. Some argue that the reason for forbidding these foods is to have one’s soul and spirit undefiled and closed from witchcraft, sorcery and demons. Whatever one’s reason may be, it is important to understand the New Covenant’s standpoint on the matter.

1. JEWISH LAWS, CUSTOMS, AND CEREMONIES WERE SYMBOLIC AND FORESHADOWS OF THE NEW COVENANT TRUTH. THEY CLEANSED NOTHING AND NOBODY.

“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.” (Hebrews 10:1-2).

The Jewish culture was filled with symbolism that pointed to Jesus Christ and the principles of the New Covenant. When studying the Old Testament, it’s important to approach it with this understanding and to not automatically assume that its practices carry over into the New Covenant. For example, the distinction between clean and unclean animals in the Old Testament was meant to separate the Jews from other tribes and prevent them from participating in idol worship, which was prevalent among the Canaanites and neighbouring tribes.

“But I have said to you, “You shall inherit their land, and I will give it to you to possess, a land flowing with milk and honey.” I am the LORD your God, who has separated you from the peoples. YOU SHALL THEREFORE DISTINGUISH between clean animals and unclean, between unclean birds and clean, and you shall not make yourselves abominable by beast or by bird, or by any kind of living thing that creeps on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean.” (Lev. 20:24-25).

Under the New Covenant, there is no longer a distinction between Jews and Gentiles, as we are all one in the eyes of God through our our Lord Jesus Christ. As stated in Galatians 3:28, ‘There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.’

God does not differentiate His children from the world based on physical appearance or dietary laws, but rather through the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” (Romans 8:9).

Therefore, the rules of clean and unclean animals do not apply to born again Christians. We are under a better Covenant and we are already cleansed by the blood and sealed by the Holy Spirit. Food cannot defile us or expose us to demons or even attacks. Food, whether you call it clean or unclean, does not make us spiritual or unspiritual. The Bible says,

“But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse.” (1st Cor. 8:8).

2. PETER’S EXPERIENCE GRAPHICALLY EXPLAINS THE NEW WAY:

Peter had a vision, “And saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” (Acts 10:11-15)

Peter refused to eat unclean animals in the vision. But the voice said to him, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.”

Despite having been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, Peter clung to the Jewish tradition that consuming these creatures would make him unclean. Therefore, He failed to obey the truth contained in the New Covenant because he did not yet have the full understanding of why the New Covenant and how that believers in Christ were not to follow Jewish laws and traditions but rather the New Covenant way of life. Unfortunately, Peter’s erroneous mindset and attitude in the vision is still prevailing in the lives of some Christians and denominations.

3. UNDER THE NEW COVENANT, DOCTRINE OF CLEAN AND UNCLEAN FOODS FALLS UNDER THE DOCTRINES OF DEMONS.

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and DOCTRINES OF DEMONS, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and COMMANDING TO ABSTAIN FROM FOODS WHICH GOD CREATED to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For EVERY CREATURE OF GOD IS GOOD, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.” (1st Tim. 4:1-5).

Doctrines of demons includes teachings that prohibit the consumption of certain foods in the name of purity and spiritual power. These teachings indirectly ascribe power, authority, and victory to demonic forces, witchcraft, and the devil. As a result, people are often warned that demons will possess them if they eat pork or other socalled unclean or prohibited foods. They plant fear and doubt, and end up eroding people’s unwavering faith in the power of the cleansing blood of Jesus.

The Bible states that every creature of God is good, and that we should not reject food out of fear of being defiled. If we have doubts or reservations about a particular food, we can choose not to eat it, but the act of eating or not eating does not determine our spiritual cleanliness. We should, therefore, not create doctrines based on personal convictions or so-called spiritual experience, to contradict the New Covenant truth and thereby mislead the children of God.

Romans 14:2-3,6b says, “One person believes they can eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Those who eat should not look down on those who do not, and those who do not eat should not judge those who do, for God has accepted them. The one who eats, eats for the Lord, since they give thanks to God, and the one who does not eat, for the Lord they do not eat and give thanks to God.”

Paul went on to say,

“I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that THERE IS NOTHING UNCLEAN OF ITSELF; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.” (Romans 4:14).

That is the Christian’s position. No animal or meat is unclean. It is your conscience that makes those classification.

4. JESUS CHRIST’S POSITION ON THE MATTER.

Jesus said,

“Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” (Matthew 15:11).

Jesus was clear; no food can defile your spirit or soul. Defilement comes from an uncleansed heart. The heart that harbours evil is what defiles a person, not unclean foods and ceremonially unwashed hands.

“So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding? Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” (Matthew 15:16-20)

What else can I add to the words of Jesus Christ? If you choose to follow some so-called spiritual enlightenment that forbids you from eating pork or any other meat or food in the name of clean or unclean, note that the truth has been revealed to you. What you do with this information will set you free or keep you in religious or ritual bondage.
