The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is set to begin a targeted enforcement operation aimed at food vendors who are operating without mandatory medical screenings during the night. This initiative is part of the AMA’s ongoing efforts to enhance food safety, raise sanitation standards, and protect residents from foodborne diseases across the city.

Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the Head of Public Affairs for AMA, explained that while many food vendors during the day have adhered to the medical screening requirements due to constant monitoring by Environmental Health Officers, many night-time vendors have avoided this process, taking advantage of less rigorous enforcement after dark.

Ankrah has directed all night-time food vendors to complete their medical screenings by the end of the week. Vendors who fail to comply will face severe penalties starting Monday, including having their food confiscated, potential arrest, or being banned from selling altogether.

He urged vendors to visit designated screening centers such as the Okaikoi South, Ablekuma South, and Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metropolitan offices, as well as the AMA Metropolitan Health Directorate at the Head Office, to undergo the necessary screening.

The AMA has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and stressed that it will enforce regulations without exception, regardless of the time of day or night.
