Report Illegal “Digging Fee” Collectors to Police – Hon. Afutu Quartey Urges Developers

By Joseph Nana Yaw Cobbina

A prominent member of the Gbawe Kwatei Family, Solomon Afutu Quartey, has called on developers to report any individuals or Asafoatse who attempt to unlawfully collect “digging fees” to the police or the family for appropriate action.

This directive was issued during a community engagement organized by the Gbawe Kwatei Family to discuss the history and development of Gbawe.

Hon. Afutu Quartey emphasized that only authorized authorities are mandated to collect such fees, and warned unauthorized persons to desist from harassing or intimidating developers at construction sites.

He further advised that anyone seeking such payments should rather direct developers to the appropriate authorities to ensure transparency and accountability.

As part of efforts to improve sanitation, the Gbawe Kwatei Family announced plans to introduce a monthly community clean-up exercise in line with Ghana’s National Sanitation Day. Residents, especially the youth and tenants, are expected to actively participate in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Hon. Afutu Quartey also revealed that the chief and elders will engage local businesses, including factories and companies operating within the community, to create employment opportunities for the youth.

Addressing social concerns, he expressed worry over rising indiscipline, particularly reckless motorbike riding.

The chief and elders urged individuals involved in such activities to stop immediately to preserve peace and order.

Parents were also advised to monitor their children closely and prevent them from staying out late, especially beyond 10:00 p.m.

He noted that parents may be held accountable for their children’s misconduct, adding that such behavior exposes young people to risks including teenage pregnancy and other social vices.

He reiterated the importance of education as a foundation for national development and cautioned the youth against drug abuse, including substances such as marijuana and excessive alcohol consumption.

In addition, the community plans to launch the Nii Kwatei Mensafio Gogo Educational Fund before the end of the year.

The initiative aims to support brilliant but needy students, while also providing skills training opportunities for others within the community.
