Berekum Chelsea winger, Dominic Frimpong, has sadly passed away following a horrific armed robbery attack on the team after their Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex. The incident occurred on the Bibiani–Goaso road at Ahyiresu, where armed robbers ambushed the team’s bus, blocking their path and opening fire.
In the chaos, players and officials were forced to flee into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire. Frimpong, who was only 20 years old, sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead.
Frimpong had been a standout player for Berekum Chelsea this season, having scored two goals in 13 league appearances.
The attack has left several players and officials still unaccounted for, as many ran into the forest for safety during the attack.
In an emotional statement, the club shared the harrowing details of the attack:
“On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was ambushed by armed robbers who blocked the road. Masked men with guns and assault rifles began shooting at the bus as the driver attempted to reverse. Our players and staff had no choice but to flee into nearby bushes to take cover.”
The club expressed gratitude for the swift response of the police patrol team, the quick dissemination of information by sports journalists, and the support from the people of Ahyiresu, as well as officials from Bibiani Gold Stars. The Ghana Football Association president’s prompt response was also deeply appreciated.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian football community, with many in mourning over the loss of the promising young player.
