Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi has earned global recognition after being named the most effective shot-stopper at the 2026 FIFA World Cup based on advanced goalkeeping statistics.
The St. Gallen goalkeeper was among Ghana’s standout performers during the tournament, despite his campaign being cut short by injury. His impressive displays contributed to the Black Stars’ strong showing and qualification to the Round of 32 in North America.
According to World Cup goalkeeping data, Ati-Zigi recorded a goals prevented figure of 2.35, the highest among all goalkeepers at the competition. The statistic measures the number of goals a goalkeeper saves compared to the quality of chances faced, providing a deeper evaluation of performance beyond traditional save percentages.
The 29-year-old’s achievement highlights his exceptional reflexes, positioning and ability to perform under pressure against some of the world’s best attacking players.
Ati-Zigi also emerged as Ghana’s highest-rated player among those who featured for at least 100 minutes at the tournament, recording an average rating of 7.21.
He played 135 minutes at the World Cup, starting Ghana’s opening group match and delivering a strong performance before picking up an injury during the team’s second fixture, which ruled him out of the remaining matches.
His absence was felt as the Black Stars continued their campaign, but the team managed to advance to the Round of 32 after competing in a challenging group featuring England, Croatia and Panama before eventually losing to Colombia in the knockout stage.
Despite Ghana’s early exit, Ati-Zigi’s performance remains one of the country’s biggest highlights from the tournament. His ability to stop difficult chances and provide stability at the back has further strengthened his reputation as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers.
