Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has hailed his team’s spirit and determination following Ghana’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana, known as the Black Stars, sealed victory in the 95th minute when Caleb Yirenkyi scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner, finishing off a fine assist from Brandon Thomas-Asante.
Speaking after the match, Queiroz described his players as committed and disciplined, saying they showed what it takes to compete at the highest level.
“The players fought like warriors. To win at this level, you must sacrifice. A win at this World Cup is very expensive,” he said.
He added that Ghana combined grit with smart decision-making in crucial moments.
“We battled like warriors and came back and won with brains,” Queiroz noted.
Forward Antoine Semenyo also urged calm within the squad, stressing that the team will not become complacent despite their strong start.
Ghana’s win places them in a promising position in Group L, but attention now shifts to a major clash against England national football team, who also opened their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia national football team.
Semenyo said the team remains focused on the task ahead and understands the difficulty of the upcoming match.
“We know it’s going to be a tough game. We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. We want to win, but we know it won’t be easy,” he said.
Ghana will next face England in Boston before concluding their Group L fixtures against Croatia.
