Ghana began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in thrilling fashion, edging Panama 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Caleb Yirenkyi in Toronto on Wednesday night.
The Group L clash looked set to end in a stalemate until the 95th minute, when Yirenkyi reacted quickest inside the box to finish from close range after a clever build-up involving substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante. The decisive goal sparked wild celebrations from the Black Stars bench and travelling supporters.
The result handed Ghana a perfect start to their tournament and three crucial points in their push for qualification to the knockout stage.
Ghana lined up with Lawrence Ati Zigi in goal, protected by a back four of Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku, and Gideon Mensah. In midfield, Elisha Owusu partnered Caleb Yirenkyi, while Ernest Nuamah, captain Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, and Kamaldeen Sulemana led the attacking line.
The Black Stars enjoyed more possession in the early stages and showed attacking intent, but Panama remained compact and disciplined, frustrating Ghana in the final third.
Panama threatened on the counterattack and forced Ati Zigi into several important saves to keep the game level. Despite chances at both ends, the first half ended goalless.
After the break, the match grew more intense and physical as both sides searched for a breakthrough. Panama’s César Blackman was booked in the 72nd minute during a tense spell of pressure.
Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz made key substitutions late on, introducing fresh attacking options including Thomas-Asante, which ultimately shifted the momentum.
The breakthrough arrived deep into stoppage time when Thomas-Asante created space and delivered a dangerous ball into the area, allowing Yirenkyi to finish clinically and secure victory.
Ghana held firm through the final moments to confirm a hard-fought and emotional win.
The result places Ghana on three points in Group L and strengthens their chances of progressing from the group stage.
Attention now turns to a highly anticipated clash against England in Boston, before Ghana conclude their group campaign against Croatia as they aim for a place in the knockout rounds of the tournament.
