A heartbreaking incident has claimed the life of a 14-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region following a heavy rainstorm.

According to reports, the victim, identified as Richmond, was electrocuted after a high-tension electricity cable fell to the ground during the downpour.

The incident occurred at White House, a suburb of Nkawkaw, where the teenager had been playing football at the time.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the fallen cable was still live when the boy came into contact with it, leading to his instant death. Preliminary findings indicate he may have accidentally fallen onto the cable while playing.

Officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have linked the situation partly to human activities near power lines, including farming, which can interfere with maintenance and increase risks—especially during the rainy season when such hazards become more dangerous.

The tragic death has left residents in shock, with many calling on authorities to intensify routine maintenance of electrical infrastructure to prevent similar incidents.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the morgue, while investigations continue.

This incident adds to growing concerns about public safety around exposed or poorly maintained power lines, particularly during storms.
