The Minority in Parliament is urging the government to urgently remove the GH₵1 fuel levy to alleviate the growing financial strain on ordinary Ghanaians. Collins Adomako-Mensah, the Deputy Ranking Member of the Energy Committee, made this call during an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
While acknowledging that the government has expressed interest in removing the levy, Adomako-Mensah emphasized the need for swift and decisive action. “The fact that the government is considering it is a positive development, but it is time to move from consideration to action and take the bold step to ease the burden on Ghanaians,” he stated.
He highlighted the heavy toll on households, noting that many fuel buyers who previously spent GH₵150 are now paying around GH₵200, reducing their disposable income significantly. The rising transport costs, driven by higher diesel prices, could further fuel inflation and deepen the economic challenges faced by citizens.
Adomako-Mensah called on policymakers to act swiftly, pointing out that other countries grappling with global fuel price pressures, such as Namibia and India, have already implemented measures to protect their populations.
