President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States has engaged in talks with Iran aimed at achieving a “complete and total resolution of hostilities” in the Middle East. This diplomatic move has eased immediate concerns about an escalation of conflict in the region.
Trump explained that the discussions prompted him to delay previously threatened military strikes on Iranian power plants. This decision caused a significant drop in global oil and gas prices.
The talks come after Trump’s stern warning on Saturday, March 21, in which he gave Iran a 48-hour ultimatum to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face what he described as the “obliteration” of its power infrastructure. His more recent comments reflect a shift toward diplomacy, though tensions remain high, and key details of the negotiations have not been revealed.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route, has been at the heart of the crisis, with international leaders emphasizing the need for its reopening to stabilize global energy markets.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also participated in a 20-minute call with Trump, during which both leaders agreed that reopening the Strait is crucial for resuming global shipping, according to Downing Street.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have indicated that they expect “several more weeks of fighting” against Iran and Hezbollah, highlighting ongoing military tensions in the region.
