John Dramani Mahama has held high-level bilateral discussions with Lee Jae Myung, aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Ghana and South Korea.
The meeting took place at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul and ended with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focused on maritime security, climate change cooperation, and digital technology.
The agreements are intended to deepen collaboration between the two nations.
During the talks, President Mahama emphasized the long-standing relationship between Ghana and South Korea, noting that both countries share democratic principles, respect for human rights, and a history of cooperation on international platforms such as the United Nations.
President Lee also praised Ghana’s contribution to maintaining maritime safety in the Gulf of Guinea, particularly its efforts in protecting South Korean citizens and vessels operating in waters often threatened by piracy.
The agreements signed include a climate change cooperation framework to support joint environmental initiatives, a maritime security partnership between the Ghana Navy and the Korea Coast Guard to enhance intelligence sharing and combat maritime crimes, as well as a technology and digital cooperation agreement aimed at promoting collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital access, and youth skills development.
President Mahama further highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in agriculture and agribusiness, referencing projects supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency to increase rice production and improve food security in Ghana.
He also pointed to the potential for stronger economic ties under the African Continental Free Trade Area, which is headquartered in Accra, positioning Ghana as a key hub for manufacturing and exports across the African continent.
According to President Mahama, combining Ghana’s natural and human resources with South Korea’s technological expertise could create a strong partnership that supports sustainable development and shared prosperity for both countries.
