“Jamestown Fishing Harbour to begin full operations soon,” – Deputy Transport Minister.
Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, recently visited the Jamestown Fishing Harbour in Accra, which has remained inactive since its commissioning in 2024. The visit aimed to assess the harbour’s current operations and find ways to improve the facility. She was joined by the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, and other officials from both ministries.
The construction of the harbour, funded by a $60 million Chinese grant, began in 2018 under the NPP government, with expectations of job creation, boosted trade, and increased national revenue. However, despite being officially commissioned by President Akufo-Addo in September 2024, the harbour has yet to fulfill its purpose. One of the primary issues was a water supply problem, which has now been resolved, allowing the ice plant and fish market to begin operating.
Madam Affo-Toffey noted that while the water issue has been addressed, the only remaining task is to get the cold store operational. “The major problem was the water issue, so through the intervention of my boss, the Transport Minister, and the GPHA, they have been able to resolve that. The ice plant is working, and the market is also operational now,” she said. With these issues resolved, the harbour is expected to begin full operations soon.
