237 Ashaiman Residents Sue Ghana Over Alleged Assault and Property Damage During 2023 Military Raid

A total of 237 residents of Ashaiman have filed a lawsuit against the Government of Ghana, seeking compensation for alleged assault, emotional trauma, and destruction of property during a military operation carried out in the area in March 2023.

The suit, filed at the High Court of Ghana, names the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defence (Ghana), and the Attorney-General’s Department (Ghana) as defendants.

The residents claim that soldiers brutalised civilians, damaged property, and subjected many people to severe psychological distress during the raid, which took place on March 7, 2023.

The military operation followed the killing of a young soldier, Imoro Sherrif, whose body was discovered in the area a few days earlier. In response, soldiers conducted a dawn swoop in parts of Ashaiman, including Tulaku and Taifa, in an attempt to track down suspects connected to the killing.

According to the plaintiffs, the operation led to widespread human rights violations, including beatings, arbitrary arrests, and destruction of personal belongings. They argue that the actions of the soldiers were excessive and unlawful.

The residents are therefore asking the court to declare the military operation unconstitutional and to order the state to pay damages for the physical injuries, emotional distress, and property losses they allegedly suffered.

The incident sparked national debate at the time, with civil society groups and human rights advocates calling for investigations into the conduct of the soldiers.

A parliamentary probe later concluded that the operation resulted in violations of civilians’ rights and recommended sanctions as well as compensation for victims.

The case is expected to test the accountability of state security forces and determine whether victims of the raid will receive compensation for the alleged abuses.
