In response to the recent military brutality towards civilians in Ashaiman, Ghana, former Ambassador to the United States, Daniel Ohene Agyekum, has spoken out against the military’s presence on the streets.
Agyekum emphasized that the military’s involvement in Ghanaian affairs since 1966 has not been helpful and that their training is not suited to controlling situations like the police. He advised the military command to keep soldiers in their barracks rather than on the streets where they may unnecessarily brutalize innocent civilians.
Additionally, Agyekum expressed his surprise that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has not made any public statement regarding the recent brutality, even just to express condolences to the victims.
