Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has claimed that former President John Dramani Mahama is backing independent candidates to weaken the NPP’s stronghold in the Ashanti Region.

In a video shared with MyNewsGH.com during Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign in the Bekwai Constituency, Chairman Wontumi alleged that Mahama is supporting independent candidates who recently left the NPP to divide the party’s support base in the region. Addressing NPP supporters, Wontumi shared an incident involving an aspiring candidate who, along with Kwabena Nyame, visited him with a bottle of Schnapp and some cash, a traditional gesture often meant to seek favor.

According to Wontumi, the candidate sought his backing to unseat Joseph Osei-Owusu, also known as Joe Wise, the current Member of Parliament for Ashanti Bekwai. Wontumi said he refused, urging the candidate to support Joe Wise for the unity of the party. However, the candidate reportedly chose to run as an independent, which Wontumi believes is part of a larger strategy by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to undermine the NPP.

Wontumi accused Mahama of using these independent candidates to “chip away” at NPP support in its traditional strongholds, asserting that these candidates are working with the NDC to destabilize the NPP. He emphasized the importance of unity in the NPP to secure victory in 2024, promising that, as Ashanti Regional Chairman, he would resist any attempt to divide the party.
