The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has confirmed that the Winneba Roundabout project has been upgraded to a full interchange and incorporated into the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme due to the expanding scope of work at the site.

Originally designed as a roundabout, the project was reassessed after technical studies and traffic evaluations, which showed the need for a larger, more efficient interchange to handle rising traffic volumes along the corridor.

Speaking during a road inspection on Wednesday, May 13, Minister Agbodza emphasized the significance of the Winneba Junction-to-Mankessim bypass, which was planned to protect cultural and historical landmarks around the roundabout area. He noted that directing heavy traffic through the historic Mankessim roundabout could have endangered heritage structures.

“The Winneba Roundabout, now an interchange, was not part of what we inherited. It was originally supposed to be a roundabout. But given the scale of traffic, slowing vehicles through a roundabout would be inefficient. The President [John Dramani Mahama] directed that the traffic grid be separated, which is why an interchange was chosen. Engineers also recommended an underpass as the most practical solution,” he explained.

The Minister praised the Ghana Highway Authority, consultants, and contractors for their swift progress, revealing that about 60 percent of the project is complete, despite only a quarter of the contract period having passed.

“They’ve done an excellent job, completing 60 percent of the work in just a quarter of the time. We sincerely appreciate the GHA, consultants, and all involved,” he added.
