Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has defended the Mahama administration’s economic management, accusing the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of concentrating solely on the Bank of Ghana’s reported losses while overlooking signs of national economic stability.
Speaking at the commissioning of a PET Scan facility at the Swedish Ghana Medical Centre in Accra on Wednesday, Mr. Iddrisu said critics of President John Dramani Mahama have fixated on the Bank of Ghana’s GH¢15.6 billion loss instead of acknowledging broader economic improvements.
“There is an ongoing debate about the Bank of Ghana and its losses. The political opposition is taking every opportunity to criticise President Mahama,” he said.
The Minister urged recognition of the government’s stabilisation efforts, pointing to declining inflation, currency stability, and strong foreign reserves as evidence of progress under the current administration.
“In all the debates, I have not seen anyone deny that John Dramani Mahama has stabilised the Ghanaian economy,” he added.
Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged that concerns about the central bank’s finances are legitimate but stressed that the opposition should also recognise improvements in key economic indicators.
“At least momentarily, the opposition must accept that the currency is stable, foreign reserves are high, and inflation is low,” he said.
His remarks come amid discussions over the Bank of Ghana’s 2025 financial results, which recorded a GH¢15.6 billion operating loss — the fourth consecutive year of losses.
While the Minority in Parliament has raised concerns about the Bank’s deepening negative equity and accounting practices, they insist their scrutiny is meant to safeguard economic stability rather than score political points. Gideon Boako, MP for Tano North and a Finance Committee member, recently emphasised that these concerns aim to protect, not politicise, Ghana’s economy.
