The Upper West Regional Islamic Education Unit is raising concern over a critical shortage of Arabic teachers in the region, saying the situation is affecting teaching and learning in Islamic schools. With more than 159 Islamic schools and less than 40 Arabic teachers, many students preparing for external Arabic examinations are struggling to get the support they need.

However, the recruitment of more than 190 Arabic teachers by the Youth Employment Agency has brought some relief. The Regional Manager of the Islamic Education Unit, Alhaji Rashid Mahmud, says the move is a welcome intervention that could help ease the pressure on schools.
