Two Arrested in Connection with Fatal Berekum Chelsea Robbery

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of two individuals in relation to the deadly robbery on the Berekum Chelsea team bus, which resulted in the tragic death of footballer Daniel Frimpong.

 

In an official statement, the police revealed that the gang leader and one accomplice were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation. One of the suspects was injured in an exchange of gunfire with police officers and is currently receiving medical treatment under police supervision.

 

The fatal robbery occurred while the Berekum Chelsea team was returning from their Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex 1996. Armed robbers ambushed the vehicle at Ahyiresu, located on the Bibiani-Goaso road. Reports suggest the attackers blocked the road before launching their assault, causing panic among the players and officials, who had to flee for their safety.

 

Daniel Frimpong, a member of the team, tragically lost his life after being struck by gunfire during the attack. He later succumbed to his injuries at the Bibiani Government Hospital, sending shockwaves through Ghana’s football community.

 

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of teams traveling for domestic league matches. In response, the police assured the public that investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are anticipated.

 

“More details will be communicated as the investigation progresses,” the statement added, reaffirming the police’s commitment to bringing those responsible to justice. Efforts to track down all individuals involved are continuing.
