The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will present petitions to the Supreme Court, the Presidency and Parliament on Thursday, August 6, as part of its nationwide demonstration dubbed “Democracy Under Attack.”
The party, at a press briefing on Wednesday, August 5, announced the route and activities for the protest, which it says is aimed at drawing attention to concerns over Ghana’s democratic and judicial institutions.
NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, disclosed that participants will begin gathering at 5:00 a.m. at the Community Centre opposite the Supreme Court.
He explained that the first petition will be delivered to the Supreme Court, after which demonstrators will move through the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel road, Efua Sutherland Ridge Roundabout and the Ako-Adjei Interchange before ending at the main entrance of Jubilee House to present another petition to the President.
Mr. Boakye added that a separate delegation made up of the party’s parliamentary leadership and some elders will present a third petition to Parliament.
He noted that the Ghana Police Service has been officially informed about the demonstration and has agreed with organisers on the route and security arrangements.
“The Ghana Police has been duly notified of this demonstration. We have had meetings with them, we have agreed on the routes and they have assured us they are going to provide security,” he said.
The NPP insists the protest is not intended to create disorder but is a call on constitutional office holders and state institutions to uphold justice, fairness, accountability, due process and institutional independence.
