The 8th and 9th parliament have put the Parliament of Ghana into disrepute – Political Expert

Dr. Nana Takyi Asiedu, a political analyst, has voiced concerns over the recent tumultuous scenes among parliamentarians within the chamber of Ghana’s Parliament, emphasizing that Members of Parliament in Ghana are misappropriating their esteemed title of ‘Honorable.’ He lamented this as a regrettable development in Ghana’s political landscape.

During an interview on the GIFTs FM Morning Show, titled Anopa Bosuo, Dr. Nana Takyi Asiedu remarked that both the 8th and 9th parliaments have significantly diminished the stature of the Ghanaian Parliament, eroding the respect and trust Ghanaians hold for their parliamentarians as exemplars of progress.

Referencing the incident involving Carlos Ahenkorah during the inauguration of the 8th Parliament and the recent altercation during the vetting of President Mahama’s ministerial nominees, along with other similar occurrences, Dr. Nana Takyi Asiedu proposed reconsidering the use of the title ‘Honorable’ for MPs. He asserted that certain Members of Parliament do not merit the ”Honorable” title and have brought the Parliament into disrepute.

Dr. Nana Asiedu, in response to the actions of the minority in parliament, particularly Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markin, the minority leader, lauded his audacity within the chamber against the formidable NDC Majority.

He emphasized that the minority leader’s valor instilled apprehension in some Majority members, which, according to him, will fortify parliamentary affairs and dissuade the NDC from making audacious decisions with their commanding majority.

He remarked that while the conduct of the minority leader might impact the NPP as a political entity, it would enhance parliamentary proceedings and operations since the NDC (Majority) would be unable to implement policies that favor their party, thereby compromising the peace and progress of Ghana under the pretext of ‘We have the numbers.’
