Daniel Ahenkora, a 19-year-old security guard, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Nkawie circuit court for stealing cables and other fittings at the construction site of the Afari Military hospital in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality. The sentencing was based on Ahenkora’s own guilty plea to charges of stealing and aiding and abetting.
Ahenkora’s accomplice, Asirifi Blankson, 55, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded into prison custody to reappear on April 14. According to Police Detective Chief Inspector Comfort Amankwaa, the two accused persons were security guards of Avengers Security Company, which was providing security services at the construction site.
On March 18, soldiers on patrol at the site spotted Asirifi cutting a 138-millimetre cable with a hacksaw blade. Asirifi attempted to move away when he saw the military patrol team, but they apprehended him and handed him over to his supervisor, who was the complainant in the case.
The next day, another soldier informed the complainant about the theft of some cables by one Richard Mensah, who was able to escape with his loot. Mensah is currently on the run. The complainant reported the matter to the Nkawie police, who arrested Asirifi and Ahenkora.
According to the prosecution, Asirifi denied the charges in his caution statement, claiming to have picked the hacksaw blade from the ground. However, Ahenkora admitted having watched Mensah steal the cables and receiving GHc200.00 from Mensah as his share from the sale of the cables. The prosecution stated that investigations are still ongoing.
