In preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) held a strategic meeting on June 9, 2026, with the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to align operational plans and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply nationwide during the tournament.
The meeting focused on seamless power system operations, allowing consumers across Ghana to enjoy World Cup matches without disruptions.
Monitoring and Oversight Framework
Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, outlined a comprehensive monitoring and oversight framework to safeguard service quality throughout the event. Under this framework, PURC’s Energy Services and Performance Monitoring (ESPM) and Regional Operations and Consumer Services (ROCS) Directorates will actively monitor electricity reliability and service delivery.
PURC will also maintain direct communication with key technical personnel from ECG and GRIDCo to enable swift regulatory intervention in case of emergencies. Additionally, the Commission has instructed both utilities to adopt a coordinated communication strategy to enhance transparency and accountability to the public.
ECG Suspends Planned Maintenance
Acting Managing Director of ECG, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, announced that all planned maintenance would be suspended during the World Cup period, with operational work limited to emergency fault rectification. Standby technical teams and contractors will be deployed to strategic locations to respond quickly to any service disruptions.
ECG will also collaborate with national security agencies to safeguard critical electricity infrastructure against vandalism and other threats. Ing. Kpekpena emphasized the importance of public communication, ensuring timely updates on restoration efforts whenever faults occur.
GRIDCo Strengthens Transmission Network
GRIDCo CEO, Ing. Frank Otchere, highlighted measures to reinforce the national transmission network and maintain system stability during the tournament. Non-critical maintenance activities have been deferred, and identified transmission hotspots addressed.
Vegetation management along transmission corridors has been intensified to prevent tree-related outages. All major substations will be manned 24/7, with area managers on standby to resolve operational issues promptly. Generation schedules have been optimized in collaboration with power generation companies to guarantee adequate supply.
PURC Commends Utilities
Dr. Suleman praised ECG and GRIDCo for their proactive, consumer-focused approach, noting that the measures reflect a deliberate commitment to reliable electricity supply and protecting consumer interests.
He reiterated PURC’s dedication to safeguarding consumer rights, assuring the public that the Commission would closely monitor utility operations and respond promptly to any unforeseen challenges during the World Cup.
