President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency relief and mitigation efforts following severe flooding that hit parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana on Monday, June 29.

The directive, announced on Tuesday, June 30, is part of government’s urgent response to the widespread flooding caused by several hours of intense rainfall.

According to a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, GH¢150 million has been allocated for immediate relief to affected individuals and communities. The remaining GH¢150 million will go into flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing future flooding in vulnerable areas.

As part of the response, President Mahama has also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to assist the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations in affected areas.

Earlier on June 30, the President conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit communities to assess the extent of destruction and announced additional interventions to support affected residents and strengthen national disaster response systems.

Government says the emergency funding is expected to speed up relief efforts while supporting long-term solutions to Ghana’s recurring flooding challenges.
