The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has attributed the June 29, 2026 flooding that affected parts of Accra and surrounding communities to the Mahama-led government, urging stronger and more coordinated action on flood control.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party expressed sympathy with victims, saying, “The New Patriotic Party joins in commiserations with the thousands of Ghanaians affected by the floods of June 29, 2026.”
The NPP further called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under President John Dramani Mahama to intensify efforts in addressing the recurring flooding challenges. “We urge the NDC government under President Mahama to stop paying lip service to the urgent flood control needs of the country and act with a sense of seriousness to deal with the situation,” the statement added.
According to the party, several parts of the capital were hit hard, including the N1 Highway, Apenkwa, Achimota, Kaneshie, Weija, Spintex, Darkuman Junction, and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
The NPP also raised concerns about what it described as a fragmented flood management system under the current administration, where responsibilities are spread across multiple ministries.
It further questioned the effectiveness of anti-flood interventions and the use of funds allocated for drainage projects, while referencing President Mahama’s earlier comments that human activities and environmental practices contribute to flooding.
The party is calling for a more coordinated and decisive national response to address the persistent flooding problem affecting parts of the country.
