On Ideal FM 96.7’s morning show Ghana WONSOM, hosted by BIC Abeiku Okai, Mr. Thomas Duah, former Black Stars player and head coach of Ashgold, shared his candid views on the current state of the Black Stars.
He stressed that the Black Stars are in need of prayers. “At first, the word Black Stars symbolized hope and confidence,” Duah remarked. He noted that the players don’t seem to heed advice, particularly from Kurt Okraku, the Ghana Football Association President, who tried speaking to them.
“Individually, they are good, but having only two days of training is not effective,” he said. Duah explained that by the time the players return from their club duties, they are already exhausted. He emphasized that African football is different from European football, and this is a critical point that must be considered.
Duah suggested that the team should limit the number of international players to no more than ten, focusing more on local players who know each other well. He believes that relying on local players would foster better teamwork and cohesion than continuously calling up international players from their clubs.
Reflecting on the days of Asamoah Gyan, Duah pointed out that morale played a huge role. “Back then, the atmosphere in the dressing room and the songs they sang boosted their confidence,” he recalled.
In his final remarks, Duah gave a bleak assessment of the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying, stating that Ghana has only a 20% hope of qualifying, adding, “There’s no luck in the Black Stars anymore.”
