A member of the NDC national communications team, Hamza Suhuyini, has stated that political parties must tighten their vetting systems and stop allowing wealth alone to influence who gets elected.

Speaking after the arrest of Asante Akyem North MP Kwame Ohene Frimpong in the Netherlands over alleged romance scam and money laundering investigations, Suhuyini said parties should begin conducting security background checks on aspiring candidates.

“Political parties must act again to make sure anybody with the deepest pockets is not automatically allowed to contest elections in Ghana,” he said on JoyNews’ AM Show monitored by MyNewsGh.

According to him, parties can work with institutions like the CID and Interpol before approving candidates.

“Political parties themselves can write to the CID or Interpol for clearance about a candidate.”

He argued that if ordinary workers are required to obtain police clearance before employment, politicians should not be exempt.

“Some jobs require police clearance. If you fail, you don’t get employed. Politics should not be different.”

He also called on the Electoral Commission to independently verify candidates before clearing them for elections.
